An Enthusiastic Thank You

A few months ago, this Collegian Design Desk received one of the kindest compliments we’ve ever gotten. In a post from Yankee in the Bible Belt, she gave us props for our blog and student newspaper’s online presence. As a student newspaper, it’s been our challenge to master both our daily print product and also the latest in social media. She said she was impressed with both.

I can’t explain how much this made our day here at the design desk.

After three and a half years, I know how easy it is to feel like what you’re doing isn’t really making a difference. Our news team is one that works day in and day out to push the limits of this student-run organization, and I speak for all of us here when I thank Yankee in the Bible Belt for her post. It really does mean a lot to have someone outside this paper notice our work and to then spread our name that much further.

So thanks again, for your post and your follow. We really do appreciate it, and we hope to keep up your good work.

yankeeinthebiblebelt:

I just found this amazing blog by the students at Colorado State Univeristy. They have set up their school paper The Rocky Mountain Collegian, just like the pros. You need to check them out! For my Advanced Compostion class at Faulkner University, I am writing on some aspects of journalism.  This blog fits right into my paper’s focus. It shows kids my age setting up, designing, and publishing a paper as well as using today’s advancement of technology to assist in the process.

Their blog focuses on the design and layout of their paper, showing the actual pages of a particular issue.  At the bottom is a list of links that send you to their website to read the article.  On the side of their blog is a list of links sending you to different areas including places to comment, view a photo gallery, meet the staff as well as visiting their facebook and twitter accounts.

Their website is very professionally laid out with a home page bar to various categories and news articles.  Their are also boxes with different sections to visit as well as advertisments, pictures and video links.  You can also look up any past article in their archives. The articles are not just limited to campus events.  They cover world events, cultural news as well as entertainment.

The students putting this out, have a very large following. Over 800 people follow them on their Facebook account.

The Facebook page for their paper is also well kept up with the latest information. There are posts from the editor asking for story ideas, offering highlights, making announcements and interacting with the readers.  It is a great place their opinions and comments.

Overall, the students at Colorado State University are a talented group of individuals. Their paper is very professional, creatively laid out, well written, well maintained and objective.  It is great to see how much students the same age as I am can accomplish for their college paper. It has given me many ideas to use for Faulkner’s paper, the Spire. It has also shown great ideas for whenever the Spire decides to go online.
